Salugen Biosciences researches, develops and commercializes laboratory testing to provide prescribers with therapy-guiding (theranostic) information to improve therapeutic selection, dosing, and monitoring. Through Affiliated Salugen Clinics in the Salugen Medical Group, a physician can order Salugen testing and deliver treatment protocols to improve patient care.
Salugen Biosciences testing currently answers two (2) major clinical questions:
Should I prescribe an opioid pain medication or more of the medication to my patient? Is there a risk for abuse, dependence, or tolerance?
Which opioid pain medication should I prescribe? What is the likelihood of response or toxicity? How will they metabolize the medication?
The answer to this first question is the Salugen HAVEOS Genetics Abuse testing.
The initial screen involves a 2-gene analysis, which is often ordered on patients at the first consideration of prescribing narcotic analgesic medication. The more in-depth analysis involves a total of 12 genes, which not only evaluates genes involved in common neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, but enzymes involved in their production, transport and receptor sites.
In a published study of the HAVEOS Genetics test, researchers found a 74% positive predictive value, meaning that persons with these gene variations were 74% likely to have a reward deficiency disorder, such as drug dependence or tolerance, alcohol abuse, and sugar cravings.
The answer to the second question is the new DOLORMED Pharmacogenetics testing.
The Salugen Biosciences DOLORMED Pharmacogenetics testing is an evaluation of genetic factors predisposing a patient to impaired metabolism of 25% of all prescription medications including pain medications. DOLOR is the Latin word for "pain".
Empiric prescribing and “trial and error” dosing can lead to high rates of treatment failure and unnecessary costs.
Salugen Biosciences’s DOLORMED™ pharmacogenetic testing applies to over 25% of prescription medications and can accurately identify poor metabolizers.
